I was so excited for this one… for approximately the first few chapters. Husband kidnapped in Thailand? A mysterious decade‑old disappearance? A return trip to uncover the truth? YES, I was already mentally packing my imaginary suitcase and practicing my “I’m here for answers, not pad thai” face.. I was ready to stomp through Bangkok’s back alleys demanding answers like a deranged tourist with a laminated clue map. Who stole our perfect husband?! And why?! I was invested.
And then the book said: “Actually… let’s talk about their relationship.” For. Seventy. Five. Percent.
We swerved so hard into Carrie and Johan’s whirlwind romance that I got whiplash. This wasn’t backstory — this was a full‑length memoir, a director’s cut, a Criterion Collection box set of their love life. I signed up for clues in dimly lit Thai bars, not a TED Talk on impulsive weddings.
Yes, the romance was lovely. Sweeping. Emotional. Very “two beautiful people fall in love while soft indie music plays.” But I wanted shady characters, cryptic hints, and at least one moment where someone whispers, “You shouldn’t be here.” Instead, I got… feelings. So many feelings. Enough feelings to fill a Costco pallet.
From a few chapters in until a few chapters out, I was disappointed. My inner gremlin wanted adventure, law‑breaking, plot twists that slap you across the face like a rogue wave. This book politely handed me a love story and said, “Enjoy!” And I said, “No. I want crime.”
The ending did finally wake up, stretch, and show some teeth. But the unraveling felt repetitive, like it was trying to shock me with the same twist wearing different hats. My jaw remained un‑dropped.
Overall, this one lands at a 2.14 on the scorecard — not terrible, not thrilling, just a lukewarm mystery smoothie with a romance garnish. I’d try another Rosie Walsh book before deciding if she’s simply not my brand of chaos, but this one didn’t scratch the itch. The itch being: international drama, questionable decisions, and plot twists that make me gasp loud enough to alarm my pets.
