I’ll admit, when I cracked this book open, I was fully prepared for “angry chef seeks revenge” energy. I was not prepared for “Witch Mob with a family vendetta and a flair for the dramatic.” But honestly? A coven of herbalist girlies who usually use their powers for good but could absolutely hex you if provoked? Delicious. We’re one voodoo doll away from a full‑blown Salem reboot.

This story follows Ana in her frantic scramble to prove she didn’t murder Paul. And honestly, did any of us truly suspect her? Please. That would’ve been the literary equivalent of leaving the murder weapon on the coffee table. Even Paul wouldn’t have approved — and he strikes me as the type who could witness a homicide, shrug, and go back to sipping his drink.

What I can’t overlook is Ana’s character glow‑up. Right before our eyes, she went from emotionally duct‑taped chaos to someone who actually steps up, solves a murder, and saves her sister. I’m so proud. Sniff, sniff, dab the corner of my eye. Sure, she’s pulling herself together, but she’ll always have that mischievous streak. And as it turns out, our resident police officer is… surprisingly into that.

With a storyline like this, I was fully prepared to be whacked upside the head with a broomstick’s worth of twisty chaos. I wanted gasps, clutching of pearls, maybe even a dramatic faint. Instead, everything got tidied up like someone said “Alexa, wrap up the plot” and the universe obliged. A neat little bow, a satisfied nod, and poof - all’s well that ends well, I suppose.  Not bad, just… surprisingly well‑behaved for a book involving people who are dancing right between the line of herbalist healers and witches.

3 1/2 stars for this read, a pleasant potion.  And hey, if you liked this one check out The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner.
